Our Road Trip to Disneyland

Twitter Moms and Discount Tire have teamed up for a very neat blogging campaign- all about Family Vacations!! This is the perfect time with the Holidays beginning!! Everyone will be doing a lot of traveling and hopefully you will get some great tips from these posts.

We just had the chance to travel to Disneyland last week! This has been my favorite family vacation so far and I would love to share about our experience. From where we live to Disneyland is a 6-8 hour trip. My daughter was in Vegas and because we had to pick her up, we decided to go the Vegas route. This added on a couple hours to our trip and with three young kids (5, 3 and 1) we knew this would be a hard trip. We decided to leave around 10 at night and drive to Vegas- this got about 3 hours of driving out of the way and the kids slept this whole time! We got a very cheap room in Vegas so we could all get some rest.

The next morning we continued on our journey. We had packed an ice chest with tons of drinks and snacks to keep us from having to stop much- Of course with a 3-year old who hasn’t been potty trained too long we still ended up stopping more than I would have liked but this was a great chance for everyone to stretch out. We also purchased a DVD player and a couple movies while in Vegas that morning. This was a HUGE help!! This kept our children occupied about ¾ of the way and gave us a chance to catch up on new movies we had been wanting to see.

One hard part is three kids in the back of a car. I love my charger and all three car seats are able to fit but there is no extra room. This gives the kids a chance to fight and believe me, they did a few times! I always try to distract them with a small toy or food. During our trip, it seemed about 10 minutes into fighting they were all passed out!

Although sometimes stressful , I really do enjoy this time with my children. Without the distractions of everyday life I love to spend this time talking with them and playing games. Once the kids were sleeping my husband and I were able to enjoy some quality time talking. I always feel like we get a little closer after a long road trip. We all made it to our hotel in one piece and everyone was in a good mood for being in the car all day!

I really think a big part of traveling with children is being prepared.  Lots of snacks, toys & a DVD player are great help ;o)

Winter Safety Tips
Winter Tires are designed to deliver safety and control in snow, ice, and cold weather conditions. Many people think that all-season tires can deliver this same performance, but this is not true. The superior traction that winter tires deliver, as much as a 25 to 50 percent increase over all-season tires, can very well be the margin you need to stop in time or turn to avoid trouble.

I wrote this blog post while participating in the TwitterMoms and Discount Tire blogging program, making me eligible to receive a $50 gift card and be entered for a chance to win a prize valued at $1,000. For more information on how you can participate, click here.”

Give the Priceless Gift of “Experiences” GUEST POST (30 Days of Christmas)

This is a Guest Post by Tara Rojas along with Kate Stabrawa.  It has wonderful advice as we seek to make Christmas a special time for our families/friends.

Give the Priceless Gift of “Experiences”

As our money and time become more and more precious – especially around the holidays – giving the gift of an “experience” can be truly special and thoughtful.

An experience – as opposed to an item or thing – creates memories for a lifetime. The experience doesn't create dust or take up space. Everyone could use one – whether it's time spent together with a loved one, or a well-deserved moment of solitude. It's never anything someone doesn't need or already have. And, recent articles and studies have touted the fact that is great experiences and memories – not things – that contribute toward one's happiness.

Think beyond the spa gift certificate (though, who wouldn't turn that down). Truly tailor the experience gift to your recipient's interests or wishes.

Cloud 9 is the ultimate website to purchase experiences. As their tagline calls it: “the gift of passion and dreams”. While more on the lavish side, an experience doesn't have to be so elaborate.

Perhaps it's a creative card with an IOU for the recipient:
  • A Day of Doing...Whatever You Want
  • Convertible car rental ride, exploration and picnic
  • A beautiful night snowshoeing in the mountains
  • The opportunity to visit a new part of your city or state
  • A house cleaning from yours truly
But if you want to stick to something more traditional or concrete, here are some other ideas that can be tailored to your specific city:
  • Annual membership to the zoo, science museum or art museum for someone wanting a little more culture in her life
  • Some local cities are now doing walking tours of gourmet shops (see Denver Gourmet) for the foodie friend
  • Teatime for Two with your best girlfriend
  • Golf foursome on a beautiful day
  • Lasertag or Paintball for a new level of family bonding
  • Fly fishing lessons for the husband that watches “River Runs Through It” again and again
  • Language lessons for the friend that's always wanted to learn Italian
  • Canvas & Cocktails for the friend that wants some artistic inspiration (see, again, a shop in Denver as an example)
If you'd like to make an experience really special, here are a few ideas that would require a little more legwork.
  • Want to re-create a first date? Work with your spouse's favorite restaurant to make his/her favorite meal.
  • Husband's a wine lover? Arrange a private wine tasting at a local vineyard or wine cellar shop
  • Wife's been traveling or busy planning all the holiday festivities? Arrange for a magically clean house when your spouse arrives home from work one day.
  • Grandma loves to take photos of her new grandchildren? Hire a photographer or visit a local photography shop to set up a few digital camera lessons.

Of course, one of the mainstays of experience gift giving is the opportunity of travel. Many airlines and hotels now make it easy to buy gift certificates. Be sure to also check out any credit card points you may have redeemed. For example, Discovercard has a two-night stay at the Hyatt available for redemption in their rewards offering.

In addition, sites like Bedandbreakfast.com – offer special gift certificate deals if you sign up for their e-newsletters. Travel sites like travelocity.com and hotels.com also offer gift certificates. In all instances, however, just remember to read the fine print for any expiration dates or blackout times.

If your recipient is more of a homebody or you’d like to give someone the gift of peace and quiet, magazine subscriptions are an excellent, inexpensive gift. Often, for $20 or less, you can give a year's worth of fabulous, glossy pages right to your recipient's mailbox. Give subscriptions like “O” magazine and “Whole Living” for friends that could use a little chill-out time; or “Elle” and “InStyle” for those fashion-forward friends of yours. And if a friend is already receiving said magazine, most publications will simply extend the subscription time. To actually give the gift, take a current issue, put it in a bag with your personal card and perhaps some tea or coffee, and then tie a ribbon on it.

Have you received a great experience as a gift from a friend or family member? What was it and how did you/do you feel about it? Do you have any other ideas for experiential gifts?

Bisou Boutique Review & Giveaway (30 Days of Christmas)

I love entertaining and I am always looking for stylish pieces that I can use- especially during the Holidays. Bisou Boutique is an awesome store offering entertaining essentials, home decor, great gifts and more all at reasonable prices. I had the wonderful opportunity to review a few of their pieces.

BEADED METAL MINI BOWLS

These adorable bowls measuring 2.5 X 2.5 come in a set of 3 for $15. I used them for candy. They would make perfect centerpieces. I also plan on using these for condiments/sauces. They can also be used for toothpicks, jewelry, candles or anything else you can possibly imagine! They look nice and are perfect for Holiday Parties!

ORNAMENT ACCENT BOWL/TRIVET

Items from Bisou Boutique come beautifully packaged. They are perfect for gift giving!! I LOVE the ornament bowl. I now have it sitting out on my table with candies. I have not had a chance to use the trivet yet but definitely will during Thanksgiving dinner. They are both stylish crafted of substancial cast- aluminum and super polished! The trivet is the perfect size- big enough yet won't take up too much of the table.

Bisou Boutique offers a wide range of other products I have my eye on. They offer great stocking stuffers and party or wedding favors.

I also want to purchase this chip and dip server to go along with my mini bowls!

If you are on the lookout for unique gifts or stylish entertaining pieces I would highly recommend checking out Bisou Boutique.

PetCakes Review & Giveaway (30 Days of Christmas)

PetCakes Review & Giveaway

This is part of the 30 Days of Christmas event hosted by A Sink Full and The Simple Things.  This event runs though December 15th so be on the lookout for lots of great giveaways and other fun things! :o)

What is better than plush animals or cupcakes? The two combined!! Well Made Toy Manufacturing Company came up with the idea to do just that and now we have PetCakes!! I was super excited to receive these. We are huge animal lovers and I knew my kids would just love them!

This series contains four plush animals that have cupcake wrappers for a bed and have hats of frosting with a cherry on top.

When they first arrived, we called the kids in the bedroom and gave them each one. They were grinning from ear to ear and of course each PetCake received a big hug! My daughter was super excited to take hers for show and tell and said everyone at school thought they were adorable. I am actually using the 4th PetCake as a friend on my desk- it makes my day when I see it sitting there. :o) Of course it is missing about three quarters of the day when the kids run off with it!

Blueberry Buddy is a Shar Pei who acts tough for his size but is a loving push over who's as sweet as the blueberry frosting on his head When sleepy, Blueberry Buddy cozies up in his own cupcake wrapper.

Twinkle Sprinkles is a playful, loving, and mischievous Beagle, whose colorful pink sprinkled frosting top looks good enough to eat! Twinkle Sprinkles likes to yelp when happy and sleep in her cupcake wrapper where her nose stays nice and toasty.

Randy Candy is a lovable mutt, scampering around playfully and taking long naps in his cupcake wrapper. Randy Candy is topped with tasty frosting and a cherry.

Coco-Coconut is a fluffy poodle with a loving side that is as sweet as a frosted cupcake. Cuddle Coco-Coconut and keep her cozy in her cupcake wrapper.

PetCakes would make a great Christmas gift or stocking stuffer. Now is a great time to start collecting- More than six additional generations of PetCakes will begin debuting in 2011 featuring new puppies, kittens, bears, rabbits, raccoons, and other furry friends. You can purchase PetCakes at specialty stores and online at http://www.toysrus.com/.  These sell for $13.99 each.  They make a very affordable, light-weight (think shipping) gift to send to someone this Holiday Season.

Patti Teel’s “The Christmas Dream” CD Review & Giveaway (30 Days of Christmas)

Patti Teel’s “The Christmas Dream” CD Review & Giveaway

This post is part of the 30 Days of Christmas event hosted by A Sink Full & The Simple Things.

This event was supposed to start Monday-  There were a few things that happened right before my trip- the posts were supposed to go automatically (I have never done this before) and they did not work.  I am REALLY REALLY sorry but will be putting all of these up between now and Sunday with the rest to follow as scheduled!!

The Christmas Dream is a welcome respite from the overstimulation of the season. On the recording, children learn to relax in Reindeer Flight Training, fly with Santa on a Global journey, hear prayers from around the world, and learn to care for all people. It was created for children, ages 3-9.

I was very anxious to listen to the Christmas Dream. My kids are hyper and have a very hard time falling asleep at night, especially when our days are non-stop busy. AshLynne (5) & Kasen (3) LOVED the CD. When I first put it in, they were very excited to listen. Patti does a great job in getting their attention. In a very soothing, gentle voice she guides them through two bedtime routines.

During the first routine, children take part in “reindeer flight training”. She invites them to relax while doing moves such as circling their feet and stretching out like a snow angel. My children really enjoyed this and it helped them to calm down and get comfy for bed.

During the second routine children’s beds turn into Santa’s sleigh as they take a trip around the world with Santa. This part teaches generosity even with how hectic life can be during the holidays. Children fly to the moon, over mountains and across seas. They have the chance to hear prayers from around the World and learn to care for others. They are usually out before this part is over.

I enjoyed listening to this CD also. It really helped me to relax and made me sleepy. AshLynne & Kasen ask for this CD before bed almost every night. It would also be great to take along for long car rides. This is a must have CD this Holiday season!

Tracks
1. Introduction: Meet Wise Owl and Moon
2. Santa's Emergency Meeting
3. Santa Says Game (Reindeer Flight Training)
4. You and Santa Visit Moon
5. You and Santa Fly Back to Earth
6. You and Santa Go to Mexico
7. You and Santa Fly From Country to Country
8. You and Santa Go to Ireland
9. Flying Over Mountains and Oceans
10. You and Santa Visit Bethlehem
11. Santa Takes You Home

Happy Veterans Day / It's almost time!!

HAPPY VETERANS DAY!

A special thank you to those who have and those who continue to serve and protect us and our Country!  Thank you for the freedom that we enjoy!

So I am really looking forward to our Disney Vacation.  I guess I am kind of a procrastinator.  It seems like just yesterday I had a WHOLE month- 30 days- and it seemed so far away!  Now I have a couple days to get ready...until Saturday night along with working and kids :0/  It is amazing how these things just sneak up on you!!  I am a "list" person so I am trying to jot down everything I can think of so I hopefully don't forget anything.  I also like to write down every single room in my house to go through and make sure it is clean.  I know I am crazy but I like the feeling of having it marked off.  I am hoping to have everything done by Saturday morning!  Does anyone have any last minute packing advice???

The 30 Days of Christmas Event starts MONDAY- our first actual day of Disney!  I am SUPER excited for it to begin.  We have some awesome sponsors and some really great products for review and giveaway.  You can subscribe to receive emails so you don't miss out on anything good.

I also have some great giveaways going on right now!  I would love for you to check them out if you haven't already :o)

Thanks to all of my awesome readers!!  You are what keeps The Simple Things going!

Sophias Style Review & Discount

Sophias Style is my new go to place for children clothing.  They have clothing for boys and girls- beautiful dresses, outfits, formal wear and much much more!!  They also offer other products such as diaper bags and toys.  I came across Sophias Style while looking for Christmas outfits for my children and I am so glad I found them!

Sophias Style was created after parents were unable to find stylish clothing and accessories all in one place for their own little princess.  They began offering children's designer clothes as well as their own designs modeled after their little Sophia.
My daughter and I chose to go with the Girls Black and White Velvet Floral Long Sleeve Christmas Dress.  I love that this dress is neutral making it easy to match my boy's outfit with it.  We were so excited to receive this dress.  It was packaged very nicely and of course my daughter had to try it on right away.  It fits perfect and is very high quality.  I know this dress will last a very long time.  She feels like a princess and would wear it everyday if she could.

The velvet is very soft and the bottom has such intricate detail.  There were no frays or other problems that you can often find in clothing.  It has crinoline underneath to add that extra poof.

They offer the most beautiful girl's Christmas dresses and I will definitely be purchasing from here every year.

If you are looking for Christmas outfits, stylish clothes or other accessories I would definitely recommend checking out Sophias Style.  They offer such a wide selection and their prices are very reasonable.

You can sign up for Sophias Style newsletter (through the 11th) to receive a 25% off promotion code good on your first purchase.  What a great deal!!

Let me know your favorite styles!

I was provided with a dress from Sophias Style for purposes of this review.  No monetary compensation was received and this does not influence my review in any way.  Special thanks to Sophias Style for sending the dress!

Strider PreBike Review & Giveaway

I was thrilled to have a chance to review the Strider PREBike.  When we first received the bike, my 5-year old daughter was still riding with training wheels and my 3-year old son was just learning how to use a bike.  When kids first learn to ride on a bike with training wheels it is often scary for them as they are trying to balance (something they haven't learned yet) as well as pedal.  The Strider bike teaches two important things that should be learned before learning how to pedal- balance and coordination.
The Strider bike came well packaged and was super simple to put together.  My husband did it in no more than 5 minutes.  The Strider bike is designed for children, ages 1 - 5 and features an adjustable seat and handlebars to accommodate your growing child.  The bike is super light, under 7 lbs.  This is a bike they can actually push around easy and it holds up to 50 lbs.  It makes such a difference riding something they control rather than feeling like there are about to tip over at any minute.

We LOVE the Strider bike.  My daughter would ride this every day!  She was never hesitant like she was on bikes with training wheels where she always felt wobbly.  This gives her control and I am happy to say she can now ride a pedal bike!  My son is still getting used to riding around on the Strider Bike.  He is still young but I am sure next summer he will be crusin around on this bike.

A short video of my daughter on the bike:

Another reason I love the Strider bike is actually because of the company.  This is a great product because there is such an amazing company behind it.  The Strider PREBike was invented by Ryan McFarland, a father of two boys.  He saw a need for a bike like this and went for it.  They stand 100% behind their bikes offering a 60-day money back guarantee and offer you to contact them if you ever have any questions.  There aren't many companies like this.

I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a starter bike for their child.  I wish I would have had it when my daughter was a little younger and I am very thankful to have it for both of my sons (yes, I am sure it will hold up that long!)

You can purchase a Strider PREbike for $99 online.

Del Monte Fruit Teacher Monday: Cash for Classrooms & Giveaway

Del Monte has a great contest going on right now:  Teacher Monday Cash For Classrooms.  This contest is designed to help support K-12 grade public school teachers across North and central America by giving them cash to purchase school supplies and fresh fruit.  I know many teachers use their own resources to purchase things needed for the classroom.  This would be a great gift to award our amazing teachers!  You can help your teachers out by letting them know about this contest.

To be eligible to win, teachers must register for the Teacher Monday Cash for Classrooms contest online at www.fruits.com.  Teachers win solely based off of votes so they need to get everyone possible to vote for them- parents, students, friends and family!  Ten winners have been selected each Monday since October 18th and there are still two Mondays left to enter.  Winning teachers will receive $750 in cash to purchase school supplies and $250 in Del Monte fresh fruit coupons for classroom snacks and to use in fruit educational activities.

"In an effort to support schools in less developed countries where many Del Monte products are grown, and where classrooms are also experiencing economic disadvantages, the “Teacher Monday: Cash for Classrooms” program will link winning U.S. classrooms with a school in Guatemala or Costa Rica. The 50 selected Central American schools will also receive $1,000 each for school supplies."
This is a great promotion I think all teacher's deserve to know about so let's give our teacher's the information need to know to enter and support them by getting our communities to vote for them.

Spend $10 or more at Victoria's Secret, Receive a rewards card worth up to $500!!

Victoria's Secret has a great promotion going on now.  If you spend $10 or more you will receive a gift card valued at $10, $50, $100 or even $500!!

Secret Reward Card will be included with your order.
Offer valid on in-stock items only.
Valid through 11:59pm EST on November 30, 2010, while supplies last.
Secret Reward cards can be redeemed December 1 - 19, 2010.

This is a great deal I will be taking advantage of!  At the very least, if I spend $10 I know I will be getting at least another $10 to use.  Victoria's Secret says they have more $100 & $500 rewards cards than ever this year!!  This would be a great place to purchase some Christmas gifts right now.
